We are thrilled to announce that our RSPCA NSW Hunter Veterinary Hospital has been named the winner of the SafetyNet PetAssist Community Service Award at the inaugural GapOnly® Veterinary Awards, held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney earlier this month.
This award recognises the impact of our Access to Vet Care (AVC) program, which launched at our Hunter Veterinary Hospital in May 2023 with the goal to remove financial and social barriers to veterinary care.
To date, this impactful initiative has helped to support 3,499 clients by providing discounted veterinary services, totalling $488,149.82 in financial support.
121 animals have benefited from receiving lifesaving treatment through additional financing, helping 114 clients, including 14 pet owners escaping domestic violence, keep their beloved pets.
The AVC fund provides up to $3,000 in financial support for essential treatment to prevent euthanasia or relinquishment, with interest-free repayment plans and no penalties for default, with any clients receiving any Centrelink benefit or facing financial hardship automatically receive a 35% discount on all veterinary services.
This program has been a team effort, however, would not have been started without the vision and leadership of Dr Ann-Margret Withers, Senior Manager of Outreach Programs, who has dedicated her career to helping people and pets in need. Also, RSPCA NSW staff members, Rosemary and Rachel, who have coordinated, and helped support every client through their challenges, to ensure we can preserver where possible, the human and animal bond.
We are so proud for this initiative to be recognised for its life-saving support, especially among so many inspiring veterinary professionals and will continue to ensure every pet receives the care they deserve.
