This is the heartbreaking reality we’re dealing with here at RSPCA:
- More people are having to give up their beloved pets because of the housing crisis.
- More of the animals coming to us have complex veterinary or behavioural needs.
- Fewer people are choosing to adopt animals because of the soaring cost of living.
The impact of this situation means our animals are spending twice as long in our care compared to previous years. Right now, the average length of stay for our adult dogs is a staggering 48 days.
Our costs have increased substantially to care for the animals who need us. It’s currently costing us almost $1,800 to care for just one adult dog during their stay with us—and we have over 460 adult dogs in our care.

We will always provide every animal with the best possible care, but shelters are much noisier and busier than a home – so our animals can sometimes feel scared and stressed.
