Cats and Kittens

Though many Australians opt to move into higher density housing, cats and kittens continue to thrive and bring joy to people’s lives.

For centuries, cats and humans have warmly coexisted. All the while, we have continued to develop our understanding of their needs, as well as the benefits that come with having them in our lives.

Though many cat owners joke about feeling like they live to serve their feline friends, cats still rely on us to feed them correctly and ensure they’re cared for and safe at home. That’s why we empower animal lovers to encourage an indoor lifestyle for their cats, encouraging cat lovers to keep their cats safe at home

A healthy, happy cat can be the key to the purr-fect home. If you are looking to open your heart to a faithful feline friend, consider adopting a cat or kitten from RSPCA NSW!

Caring for a Cat or Kitten

Caring for a cat is known to improve both our mental and physical health. As some of humanity’s longest friends, cats bring joy and cuddles to our homes and can provide us with love and company when we’re sick or feeling down.

That’s why it’s only fair that we learn how to properly care for our feline friends, either by reading science-based literature about caring for cats and kittens, or by consulting a veterinarian or animal health and welfare professional. Whether you’re adopting a cat of your own or simply interested in caring for animals, RSPCA NSW can help you understand and meet your animal’s needs.

Additionally, as an animal guardian, you are responsible for bringing your cat to a veterinarian for vaccinations and regular health checks. RSPCA NSW Veterinary Hospitals can provide high quality care and support for you and your feline friend. From routine health checks to specialised consultations, our veterinary teams can help you ensure your cat can enjoy a good quality of life.

The Cost of Owning a Cat

Thankfully, cat care tends to cost less than looking after a dog, which (according to the Australian Veterinary Association) can cost the average person more than $25,000 per pet! However, the average household cat can live as long as 20 years, meaning it’s still important to consider costs before deciding to live with a cat.

From scratching posts, food, and bedding to the initial adoption fee, pet parents typically incur a long list of expenses following adoption. Thankfully, RSPCA NSW covers several essential procedures to ensure our cats are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, and treated for parasites prior to adoption.

At RSPCA NSW, we believe all cats and kittens deserve a safe and permanent home, and the chance to live with a family that cherishes and protects them. That’s why we created the Keeping Cats Safe at Home campaign, inspiring cat lovers across the state to keep their companions safe and at home.

The campaign aims to support and educate those taking care of their feline friends, encouraging them to keep their cats from roaming outdoors or away from their properties. By creating a stimulating indoor environment for your cat or kitten to enjoy, you can help to ensure the well-being of your cat, native wildlife, and local environment.

The safe at home lifestyle is about securing their comfort in the home – ensuring we’re meeting our cat’s needs while minimising threats to their health and wellbeing. As a part of the Keeping Cats Safe at Home project, we share insights, advice, and inspiration on topics like cat safety and enrichment to effectively extend and enhance the lives of cats and kittens across NSW.

Every cat and kitten awaiting adoption with RSPCA NSW has been microchipped, desexed, vaccinated, and treated for internal and external parasites. Moreover, they have undergone a series of veterinary checks to ensure that no further treatment or rehabilitation is required, meaning our adopters can simply focus on starting a life with their animal companions.

As a charity, we use our adoption fees to help us recover a portion of these costs, so we can spend more of our resources on supporting people and pets in need.
