Adopt or Foster

Give a rescue animal the gift of love through adoption or foster care.

Adoption and Foster Care

Every year, thousands of animals turn to our shelters and clinics for help, from abandoned or neglected animals to those in need of medical care. At RSPCA NSW, we help a wide variety of animals on their journey to adoption by providing them with tailored medical treatment and support.

We believe that all creatures, great and small, deserve to be healthy, happy, and safe. No matter their background, every living being has the capacity to bring light to people’s lives, which is why we strive to ensure that animals can enjoy a good quality of life.

By matching eager pet enthusiasts with the animal of their dreams, we provide thousands of animals a year with stable, loving homes. Moreover, our foster carers complement our shelters and adoption centres by providing our animals with time and space to recover from treatments outside the shelter, giving them experience with a family dynamic as they await a permanent home.

Australians often turn to pet shops and breeders to find the perfect ‘designer pet,’ but you don’t have to shop around to find a perfect furry friend. Our Rescuoodles are a brand-new breed comprised entirely of rescue animals! These quirky characters come in all shapes and sizes – some meow while others bark – but, no matter what they look like, their personalities are sure to melt your heart!

Whether you’re giving them a family for life or providing temporary foster care, there are so many ways that you can make a difference for animals in need. Every one of our beautiful Rescuoodles is someone’s future forever friend. All they need is a kind-hearted animal lover to open their heart and home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Rescuoodle?

RSPCA NSW embraces love for all living beings: we believe that every creature has the capacity to bring light to people’s lives.

Our Rescuoodles are a brand-new breed comprised entirely of rescue animals! Though they come all colours, shapes, and sizes, something sets them apart from other breeds: an irreplaceable personality that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

We invented the term ‘Rescuoodles’ to spotlight the animals waiting for a home by reclaiming the ‘oodle’ name (commonly associated with prestigious poodle crossbreeds) and playfully highlighting all the reasons people should adopt a rescue animal.

No matter their background, rescue animals are a source of immeasurable joy; their potential to be lifelong companions makes them a breed unto themselves.

RSPCA NSW rehomes a range of adorable animals, including cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, and more! We can help you find your very own Rescuoodle at one of our shelters and adoption centres.

We also work alongside partners like Petbarn to find homes for all our animals. Thanks to our ongoing partnership with more than 30 Petbarn stores, you can adopt RSPCA NSW animals from more locations than ever before.

When you’re ready to adopt, don’t forget that you’ll be required to present a photographic identity document, complete with your name and current address. If you already have a dog, you may need bring them in for a meet and greet to ensure they’ll get along with the newest member of the family.

Though we update our online lists of adoptable animals every day, there is a chance that an animal you are interested in will have found a home prior to your arrival at our facilities.

Every RSPCA NSW animal that requires desexing, microchipping, parasite treatment, and vaccinations undergoes all these procedures prior to adoption. Each animal also goes through a series of comprehensive veterinary checks along with any necessary training, quarantine, and rehabilitation.

As a charity, we use our adoption fees to help us recover a portion of these costs, so we can allocate more of our resources to supporting people and pets in need.

Whether you’re saving adoption for later or simply holding off on a new forever friend, there are so many ways to lend a hand if you’re looking to support animals in need.

Becoming a foster carer is such a rewarding experience. If you’re unsure about adopting but looking to personally assist our animals, consider joining our wonderful team of incredible foster carers today!

Furthermore, our shelters and adoption centres facilitate a range of volunteering opportunities, perfect for those currently unable to welcome an animal into their home. From joining our Emergency Response Team to assisting with animal transportation, there are so many ways you can help support communities and their pets.

Foster carers provide our wonderful animals with around-the-clock care and consideration, the kind of positive attention our shelters aren’t always able to provide. At any one time, animals in foster homes can account for up to 21% of all the animals in our care. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of more than 900 foster carers, we help thousands of animals:

  • Recover from surgery or illness in a stress-free, family environment
  • Care for their young ones and litters
  • Enjoy some quiet time away from the bustle of the shelter environment

Moreover, foster care readies our animals for the dynamic of a stable home. The more we learn about their behaviour in a predictable family environment, the easier it is for our staff to ensure we find their perfect match.

Help us give our animals the care and comfort they deserve by becoming a RSPCA NSW foster carer today!

With your help, we can give our animals a safe, temporary abode. All you need is an animal-friendly home, time, and love for your foster animals! With that in mind, it is essential that our carers:

  • Can provide a safe and secure environment to house our wonderful foster animals
  • Ensure that all residents of their households have agreed to foster caring
  • Have the ability to transport their animals to a veterinary clinic if a medical emergency arises
  • Are willing and able to take their animals to any scheduled surgeries, vaccinations, or other appointments at our shelters or veterinary clinics
  • Ensure that all animals currently in their homes are fully vaccinated before welcoming another animal into their family

Our Foster Care team will provide you with food, bedding, supplies, and veterinary support, meaning you can focus on providing a safe and caring environment for animals in need.
