Little bit about Dexter, the Rescuoodle

Oh, hey there! Nice to meet you.

My name is Dexter, after a long stay here at RSPCA I'm finally ready to find my forever home and meet my new family!

I'm looking for a special family to match my special personality. I have lots of love to give to someone who is patient, and willing explore the world with me at my own pace.

I am a smart boy, and love having things to do. I love toys, kongs and puzzles! As I am still a young fellow and might be a little too big for 'puppy school' now, I would love if my family can make up for lost time and help me with some training! I know a few cool tricks already, but what I really need to work on that most pups might find easy by my age, are things like getting into a car, meeting new dogs and people, seeing traffic, and hey, I've never seen a vacuum before! Due to growing up in a shelter I have not had much of a chance to get out and see what the big wide world has to offer and it can be scary! The staff at RSPCA have worked with me and shown me a few building blocks that I can use in my new life which I would be happy to show you.

I can find new things a bit scary sometimes, I would appreciate if my new family took my feelings into consideration and took things at my own pace. It would be ideal for interested adopters to have had experience with dogs like me in the past, someone who can speak my language and understand what I am trying to communicate or know when I am feeling uncomfortable or overwhelmed by looking at my body language. If you can be my advocate and help me to feel safe, I promise to repay you with love and the biggest puppy dog eyes you've seen!

When I feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable, I do try to communicate this the best way I can. But I'll admit, sometimes when it's too much to handle I just need to jump up and down to shake out the stress (sometimes on you)- when I do have these moments I would love for you to be patient with me and know the best ways to get through. As I grow to know and trust you more and with a little bit of training, I promise that this will happen less and less!

For this reason, it is best that I go home with a mature family and no small children. Unfortunately, I also find that young children are a little too unpredictable and playful for me- I get a bit startled when something moves unexpectedly or there'd lots of loud noises around me.

I have a hard time in the hustle and bustle, I am most comfortable in a calm and quiet environment and will need somewhere nice and quiet to relax. I love having my own bed to sleep in the sun outside, but also love to be with my family and join in on family movie nights inside. Having the choice to move about the house and go to my 'safe space' if I need a break or some alone time is absolutely necessary for me to be a happy pupper! I don't particularly love getting pats from unfamiliar people! But once I get to know you, I don't mind a cuddle at bedtime or on the couch watching tv on my own terms; please go slow with me while we are still getting to know each other.

I will need to go home as an only dog for now, this is because I would prefer to get to know my family and form a strong trust with you with minimal distractions while I settle in. Another dog would just get me too excited and think it would be best to go slow in the beginning.
